Planning for progress
SYMMETRY BLOG - Planning for progress!
Last week we talked about setting SMART goals. This week, we’re focusing on the next step, planning, because goals don’t happen by accident.
You’ve probably heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you are preparing to fail.” Whether it’s organising family life, preparing for exams, or fitting training into a busy schedule, nothing runs smoothly without a plan. Sport and exercise are no different.
Effective planning starts with your goal. Work backwards from your timeframe and map out the steps you need to take. A goal six months away allows for gradual progress; a six-week goal needs more focus and intention. Either way, writing the goal down isn’t enough, you need a roadmap.
Planning helps break big goals into manageable actions. Weekly training sessions, recovery, nutrition, and sleep habits suddenly make a challenging goal feel achievable. It also helps you anticipate obstacles and plan around real life, busy workdays, family commitments, or low-energy moments.
Remember, your plan doesn’t need to be perfect. Life happens. A good plan is flexible and keeps you moving forward, even when adjustments are needed.
Don’t wait for January. Starting now builds momentum, confidence, and consistency — and puts you ahead of the New Year rush.
